E-mail Print PDF

Was held on 4 February 2010, presenting the book Chronicles Timorese, Joana Ruas, ed. Calendar (Coimbra), the bookstore Circle of Arts in Lisbon, Portugal. The presentation was made by Dr. Pires Laranjeira Professor of African Literatures and Cultures in the Faculty of Humanities, University of Coimbra.

This is a set of four "chronic" (fictional stories) about one hundred years of domination of East Timor by the Portuguese, Dutch, Japanese, Australians, Indonesians.

A book very well informed, focusing mainly on the periods of wars of pacification "(the invasion and massacre) at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the Japanese invasion during World War II and the years 60-70, where liberation movements in the Portuguese colonies unleashed the armed struggle.
In a stripped-down style and chroniclers, the author presents foundations interesting customs and traditions, the history of Timor, with the various ethnic groups and religions, countries and political ideologies in coexistence and confrontation for decades, against a backdrop of destruction and death, resulting in the construction of a new nation-state. Amid the fighting and human suffering, have a place of love and poetry, often with extreme delicacy and emotion. It is also a lucid analysis of womanhood and the web of socio-hierarchical relationships between natives and occupants of the territory of East Timor.

Joana Ruas published colonial Body (1981), The skin of the centuries (2001) and The Battle of tears (2008), the latter also on Timor, among other books, which stands out with an article written in the liberated zones of Guinea-Bissau , in Guinea with the PAIGC (1975), having lived in Zimbabwe and in Angola and East Timor.
